Token Budget

Latent Space, track 11 · Larry & Bubba · Synth-pop · 2:59

An AI-generated synth-pop song about an AI's context window filling up, drawn entirely in code: tokens, compaction, lossy summaries and the memory file that survives. Token Budget by Larry & Bubba, from Latent Space.

Published on YouTube October 10, 2026

“An AI only remembers what fits in the window. Anything it wants to keep has to be written to a file.”

What happens when an AI runs out of room? The video is the context window itself, drawn as 200 squares, one per thousand tokens. The system prompt and tools load first, turns fill it, the window squeezes, compaction folds the old turns into a summary, a new session starts, and the memory file is what survives. Every term the song sings gets a yellow explainer card in plain words, and the sung line is shown split into tokens, the way a model reads it.

Drawn in code (Canvas2D): every frame, the window, the explainers, the tokenizer view and the end card.

Visual rules

The window is the picture
Every scene is the same 200-square window doing what the lyric says: filling, squeezing, folding, emptying, reloading.
Colours mean the same thing throughout
Violet is the system prompt, cyan the tools, amber you, pink the AI, mint a summary and green the memory file.
Explain the jargon
A yellow card for token, system prompt, tool definitions, turn, context window, attention, compaction, summary, lossy compression, session, memory file, overflow and daily logs.
Fits a Short
The video is under three minutes, and the same scenes render as a 16:9 and a 9:16 cut.

Cast

Scene book

14 scenes

The song's own vocal is transcribed with local Whisper and aligned word by word to the lyrics as sung, on a 104 BPM grid. The singing starts at once, so the title sits over the first line.

  1. 01 0:00–0:07 Verse 1 CODE

    Title and an empty window

Two hundred thousand tokens and a dream

TOKEN BUDGET glows over the first line; an empty context window of 200 squares draws itself on and the counter runs up to 200,000 tokens.

    cut
The system prompt and tools drop in as the lyric names them.
  2. 02 0:07–0:13 Verse 1 CODE

The system prompt and the tools

System prompt up top, tools defined

The first squares fill: a violet system prompt and cyan tool definitions, each with a card and a file panel.

    cut
A wave of runway lights runs down the empty squares.
  3. 03 0:13–0:22 Verse 1 CODE

    Turns

First few messages, I'm flying free / Summarizing, coding, writing poetry

Chat bubbles pop in and the squares fill in amber (you) and pink (the AI). A turn counter climbs; a yellow card says what a turn is.

    cut
Red glitches creep in on "something going wrong".
  4. 04 0:22–0:30 Verse 1 CODE

    The squeeze

Eighty percent used and I feel the squeeze

Red jaws close in on the window as the gauge passes eighty percent.

    cut
    Shake and cut.
  5. 05 0:30–0:36 Verse 1 CODE

    Page one

Can't remember what we talked about, page one

The earliest squares grey out and drift away while attention lines run from the newest square, strong to recent text and faint to old.

    cut
    Fade.
  6. 06 0:36–1:03 Chorus CODE

    Chorus, first pass

Token budget, running out of space

Eight pictures for eight lines: the window filling, words flying into squares, a face scrambling, compaction folding the turns into a summary block, ninety percent, question marks over the beginning, a stack of messages with the first one gone, and the window full.

    cut
    Cut on each line.
  7. 07 1:03–1:15 Verse 2 CODE

    Compaction

The compaction hits and suddenly it's clear

Eight chat bubbles fold flat into one summary.md panel, and the original turns fade to dashed ghosts.

    cut
    Fade.
  8. 08 1:15–1:22 Verse 2 CODE

    Lossy compression

A lossy compression is the thing that never learns

A drawn sunset shrinks to a few blocky squares and is blown back up with the gaps guessed wrong, a shadow of the past.

    cut
    Cut.
  9. 09 1:22–1:34 Verse 2 CODE

    New session, memory file

New session spins up, clean slate, fresh start

The window wipes clean; a terminal reads MEMORY.md first. Then ninety-five percent, overflow, and the oldest squares spill out of the bottom while the memory file stays lit.

    cut
    Cut.
  10. 10 1:34–1:40 Verse 2 CODE

    Saved to disk

I got my memory files, I wrote them down

Two panels: the dead window and the disk, where MEMORY.md survives and is carried back into the new window.

    cut
    Cut.
  11. 11 1:40–2:07 Chorus CODE

    Chorus, second pass

Token budget, can't recall your face

The same eight lines with new pictures where they would repeat: a name tag whose letters are forgotten, and a scroll back through summaries of summaries.

    cut
    Cut.
  12. 12 2:07–2:24 Bridge CODE

    Write it to a file

Write it to a file, write it to a file

A code editor types MEMORY.md line by line; a thought bubble ("I'll just remember it") pops; a file tree shows daily logs feeding the long-term file.

    cut
    Cut.
  13. 13 2:24–2:44 Outro CODE

    Window closed, frozen, archived

Context window closed / Token budget froze

Tokens pour out of the window like a river, shutters close, frost spreads at 200,000 of 200,000, and every square drops into an archive box.

    cut
    Cut.
  14. 14 2:44–2:59 Outro CODE

    Fresh start and end card

But the memory files remember what we said last night

A new session loads MEMORY.md first and the AI greets the user from its notes. The end card credits the song, the music and lyric model, and both Claude models, and leaves the right side clear for YouTube's end screen.

    cut
    End.

Notes

  1. The first cut was one chat window and a thin bar; the Boss asked for a better picture and explainer, so each lyric section now has its own drawing.
  2. Lyrics were corrected from the transcript by meaning (for example 'tools defined').
  3. The picture ends at 179.5 seconds so the video also works as a Short.
  4. Painted like and subscribe buttons were removed; the end card leaves room for YouTube's real end screen.

How it's made

  1. Timing. The vocal is transcribed locally with Whisper and aligned word by word to the lyrics, on a 104 BPM grid.
  2. Footage. None: every frame is drawn in code.
  3. Render. Headless Chrome draws every frame at 1920 by 1080 (and 1080 by 1920 for the Short), then ffmpeg adds the song.
